Juicy
10.29.04 (1:10 pm)   [edit]
Okay... have to get this off my chest. I am morally opposed to wearing words on your ass. I got behind a girl that was wearing sweatpants that had in big letters "JUICY" on the ass. Why? Can anyone tell me? Do I really want to know?

My brother sent me this link... Voting

My mind is filled with the election and not much else these days. I volunteered to do poll watching on Tuesday. We are having a meeting tonight about assignements. If nothing else I am getting to meet people in Jackson.

Liberal
10.29.04 (8:56 am)   [edit]
"But, If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal,' then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal.'"

Truth

I just thought this was a great quote .... it seems to be right for me.

One reason, among many, why I can't vote for Bush
10.28.04 (6:56 am)   [edit]
This has made it's way in to my mailbox several times in the last few months and thought it worth sharing... It is along the lines of the post I did last week about pharmacists refusing to fill perscriptions for birth control.

Subject: Bush Appointment

President Bush has announced his plan to select Dr. W. David Hager to head the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee.

The committee has not met for more than two years, during which time its charter lapsed. As a result, the Bush Administration is tasked with filling all eleven positions with new members. These positions do not require Congressional approval.

The FDA's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee makes crucial decisions on matters relating to drugs used in the practice of obstetrics, gynecology and related specialties, including hormone therapy, contraception, treatment for infertility, and medical
alternatives to surgical procedures for sterilization and pregnancy termination.

Dr. Hager is the author of "As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now." The book blends biblical accounts of Jesus healing women with case studies from Hager's practice. His views of reproductive health care are far outside the mainstream. Dr. Hager is a practicing OB/GYN who describes himself as "pro-life" and refuses to prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women.

In the book Dr. Hager wrote with his wife, entitled "Stress and the Woman's Body," he suggests that women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome should seek help from reading the Bible and praying. As an editor and contributing author of "The Reproduction Revolution: A Christian Appraisal of Sexuality, Reproductive Technologies and the
Family," Dr. Hager appears to have endorsed the medically inaccurate assertion that the common birth control pill is an abortifacient. We are concerned that Dr. Hager's
strong religious beliefs may color his assessment of technologies that are necessary to protect women's lives or to preserve and promote women's health. Dr. Hager's track record of using religious beliefs to guide his medical decision-making makes him a dangerous and inappropriate candidate to serve as chair of this committee. Critical drug public policy and research must not be held hostage by anti-abortion politics. Members of this important panel should be appointed on the basis of science and medicine, rather than politics
and religion. American women deserve no less.

I think I am going to run by a Dairy Queen on the way home tonight... they have a new holiday blizzard.. Pumpkin Pie... with shortbread cookie, pumpkin pie mix and whipped cream. Have I mentioned that this is delicious? I mean wow. You only need a small since it is really rich.

I work with magazines all day and really wish that they wouldn't put in perfume samples. I just processed one magazine that had one that reminds me of Church inscense. *gag* I am feeling a little light headed.

Big Ass Birds Pt. 2
10.27.04 (11:45 am)   [edit]
Someone commented that my big birds are probably Gackles... Here are a couple of pictures and I think these are what they are... scary yellow eyes. *more shudders*

Big Ass Birds
10.27.04 (6:02 am)   [edit]
Every fall the campus is invaded by big Hitchcock sized birds... I am not sure what type of bird they are other than big crow like things. They make so much noise it is rather scary.. especially since it is still dark out. I feel like they are going swoop down and start pecking at my head. That and I am afraid of slipping on the considerable mess they leave behind. *shudder*

More Children's Books
10.26.04 (6:57 am)   [edit]
Yesterday I blogged about one of my favorite children's book... I should have said it is one of my favorite modern children's books. Here are some of the "classic" authors who top my list.

1)Anything by Maurice Sendak... he is just brilliant, truly brilliant.
2)Mercer Mayer's Litte Critter Books
3)Dr. Suess (Side note there is a great book called Dr. Seuss Goes To War if you want to check out his adult cartoons.
4)Eric Carle .... I love the colors of his books
5)Pokey Little Puppy was one of the first books I remember actually owning.

So, what are some of your favorite kids books.

k

P.S. I should tell you I have a HUGE kids/ya book collection. I mean hundreds of books and I don't even have any kids. They are all just for me.

Wanda Sykes
10.26.04 (5:57 am)   [edit]
Friday night I went to see Wanda Sykes with my friend Carrie. All I can say is the woman is hilarious. I can also say she is smart too. The show was close to selling out. One of the things I really like about her is that she doesn't dumb herself down. And she isn't PC... she just says what she wants and doesn't apologize for it. If she comes to your area I would go check her out.

"Sitting Ducks" is one of my favorite kids books. The story is cute and the images are wonderful. I just found out that there is a series of books involving the characters. I am going to have to hunt them down....  There is even a dvd of cartoons I can buy. I wish I didn't know this...

Sweet Potato Fries
10.22.04 (6:03 pm)   [edit]
I had something I wanted to blog about this morning, but since tblog was being all Diva like and not letting me in I forgot what it was I wanted to write. *sigh* So, I will just say that I love sweet potato fries. With Ranch dressing... or this spicy dressing they have at Seva (a vegetarian resturant here in town. I went to a new greasy spoon on campus and had SPF and a grilled cheese sandwhich. The sandwhich was perfectly grilled, which isn't always the case

Life is good.

Just a few things
10.21.04 (3:57 pm)   [edit]
~ Having just mailed out the AOL cds I just picked up 91 more at the local video store. They were in both the free weekly papers. 91 at just one place!!! *sigh*

~ Went shopping at CJ Banks last night... which is the plus size version of Christopher Banks. I had to wade through lots of sweaters with pumpkins and snowmen on them, but I found 2 skirts, 1 pair of pants, 1 shirt and 2 sweaters... for under $60!!!!!

~ Sat for an hour in the Secretary of State office so I could change the title on my car... only to discover that I would have to have my stepdad there or have him fill out some form. The DMV is Hell's waiting room... I swear

~ Tomorrow night I get to go see Wanda Sykes with my friend Carrie. I am quite excited... I think she is hilarious.

~ The other day on the bus this man whose torso looked like a melted marshmallow, and little bird legs. He was wearing shorts, and sat with his legs spread as far as he could. It almost made me ill... he was so gross!!!! You could almost smell the Doritos and Coke eminating from him. :)

Ever wonder...... ?
10.20.04 (3:55 pm)   [edit]
Reading a fun book right now... It is The Explainer by the writers of Slate Magazine. It answers important questions like;

1) What happens to Recalled Meat?
2) How do you measure snowfall?
3) What is Ovaltine anyway?

If you don't have a lot of time to read, this one can be taken in little bits. It is probably considered a bathroom book. :D I love odd fact books. They make me feel smarter when I am finished.

Jeans
10.19.04 (1:27 pm)   [edit]
I just bought a pair of jeans last night... I haven't had a pair of jeans in 5-6 years. I am wearing them today... it is a bit strange. I was lucky in that I didn't have to try on 500 pairs. The ones I bought were the third pair I tried on. I am not used to pants... I only have 2 pairs of pants.... one which will soon have to be tossed because it is ready to fall apart. For me it is just easier to find skirts to fit than it is to find pants that will even sort of work. I need to go through my closet and get rid of some clothes. I have had most of my things for at least 5 years. I am ready to get some new clothes. Just wish I didn't hate shopping for them so much.

Birthday round up
10.18.04 (11:21 am)   [edit]
Morning all. Thank you for all the birthday wishes. It was a very relaxing weekend. I did a craft show on Saturday. It was okay, I didn't expect a lot because it was the first time they held it. I ended up going out to lunch with D, who I shared a table at the craft show. The server was nice and gave me the birthday brownie even though my birthday wasn't until Sunday. Angela and Peter took me out to Outback for dinner and to the movie of my choice. Which was Shaun of the Dead I allowed them an out... since zombie comedies are not for everyone. I found it to be quite funny, and slightly gross. A and P laughed too which made me feel good. I hate to recommend a movie that people end up despising. Yesterday I was really lazy and didn't do much. Carrie took me out to eat... we were going to go to Chi Chi's, but it was closed... and she then remembered that the chain went belly up. We ended up at Ruby Tuesdays. It was nice just have a day to do next to nothing. I did talk to a lot of people on the phone which was nice.

No more AOL cds
10.15.04 (3:51 pm)   [edit]
Just got back from the post office. I dropped off over 500 cds that are now on their way to No More AOL CDs I think these guys are doing a great thing. I hope it goes somewhere. It only cost about $11 to send them. Cheaper than I thought. You can go to their website to read their message statement and see if you want to help.

Muppets
10.15.04 (12:19 pm)   [edit]
I am so excited... I just heard that there is going to be a new muppet movie... Muppet's Wizard of Oz. How wonderful is that? My question is who will play what roles? Oh, just checked out the website... Pepe is Toto. Gonzo as Tin Thing, Kermit as Scarecrow, Piggy as the Wicked Witch!

Dark Days
10.14.04 (12:51 pm)   [edit]
I started watching Dark Days a docmumentary by Marc Singer. It is about a group of homless who live in the tunnels below New York near Penn Station. I am about an hour in to it and it is facinating. It really shows the life these people lead and how they make them as normal as possible. They cook meals, have pets and help each other out. This documentary really humanizes the homeless issue. You actually see them rather than just pass them by. If you like documentaries I would check this one out. An added bonus for me is that the score is by DJ Shadow.

Prop 2 in Michigan
10.13.04 (4:22 pm)   [edit]
This Mike Thompson cartoon was in today's Detroit Free Press

[image]chicalookate_66692 2682.jpg[/image]

In Michigan we have to vote on Prop 2, our very own special version on the gay marriage ban. I was stopped on the Diag the other day by a member of Stonewall Democrats who explained the proposal. I knew some of the specifics, but not all. She told me there are already 5 laws on Michigan's law books that say gay marriage in Michigan is illegal. The ammendment is vaguely worded so that it could effect hetero couples who aren't married. I don't think a lot of people realize this.

With all that is wrong in this country why are we focused on this and not jobs? Or healthcare?

*sigh*

Makes me angry
10.12.04 (4:49 pm)   [edit]

Lynne blogged about this the other day and I had read about this before in Prevention. This disturbs me a lot. I think more people to really to know about this. I lifted this article off of CNN. Also the fact that the guy Bush wands for the FDA has said that women should pray and read the bible to cure PMS. I take Birth Control because I need to regulate crazy out of control periods. I guess I could go bleed on them... gross, but I would do it if I had to.

Pharmacist says he feared 'spiritual pain'
Hearing considers refusal to fill birth control pill prescription

MADISON, Wisconsin. (AP) -- A former pharmacist said Monday he refused to fill a college student's prescription for birth control pills or transfer it to another pharmacy because he did not want to commit a sin.

Neil Noesen, 30, testifying before a judge at a disciplinary hearing, could face a reprimand or loss of his pharmacist's license for refusing to help Amanda Phiede obtain her pills.

"I could have trouble sleeping at night. I could be suffering the worst kind of pain. Spiritual pain," Noesen told an administrative law judge.

The state Department of Regulation and Licensing accuses Noesen of unprofessional conduct for not transferring Phiede's prescription.

"The additional risk of pregnancy should not have been imposed on her by someone else," said John Zwieg, a lawyer for the department.

Noesen's attorney, Krystal Williams-Oby, said Noesen broke no laws. She described him as a devout Roman Catholic and said any punishment would violate his constitutional right to religious expression.

According to the complaint, Noesen was an independent pharmacist filling in at a Kmart pharmacy in Menomonie in July 2002 when Phiede, then a student at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, asked to renew her birth control prescription.

Noesen, the only pharmacist on duty at the store at the time, asked if the prescription would be used for contraception, then refused to refill it when she said it would. "I just wanted to get my pills and go home," Phiede said.

Noesen also refused a Wal-Mart pharmacist's request to transfer the prescription, she said.

Phiede returned to Kmart the next day with police, she said, and the store manager called Ken Jordanby, the pharmacy director who was out of town. Jordanby filled her prescription when he returned the following day.

In his testimony, Noesen talked about God's law and accused Zwieg of harassing him.

"It's good for a person to be persecuted," he said when asked by his lawyer how the proceedings have affected him. "Really, it helps you grow in your faith."

The hearing was expected to conclude Tuesday. The judge will make a recommendation to the examining board on what punishment, if any, Noesen should receive.

What is your excuse?
10.12.04 (1:52 pm)   [edit]
I was listening to the radio yesterday and they were talking about Christopher Reeves and how much it took for him to just get out of the house. That it took a team of people and a good chunk of the day. The point the person was making was that we often say we don't have time or we are too busy or (enter excuse here) to try and change things, to vote or (enter cause here). But if C.R. could get out and give speeches when it obviously took so much even to get there and then to speak when it was hard for him to do so, what does that say for our excuses? What should we say when we don't make time for something? Maybe that it isn't important enough for you to make time. We all fell that way from time to time. I am now at the point that I don't want to say that. I want to make time, I want to try and change things. I really feel that it needs to come from the bottom. That we the people need to force change. Our government isn't going to change for our good if we don't demand it. They count on us being too tired at the end of the day to watch what they are doing. They want us exhausted and distracted.

Now, I don't think it has to be all or nothing. I think that if everyone made a change here and there, nothing huge, that big changes would be the result. Maybe I am an optimist, maybe I am naive. But I want something different than what I have now. I want to feel that I am having an impact. Now, I just have to go about figuring out how to do that.

10.12.04 (1:00 pm)   [edit]

Someone brought in chocolate cake. It is really really tasty. Anytime I eat cake in the morning I think of Bill Cosby's chocolate cake piece.. maybe from "Bill Cosby Himslelf"? It has wheat, egg it must be healthy. I need to go find some milk.....

Weekend roundup
10.11.04 (5:42 pm)   [edit]
I had lots of thoughts rolling around my head, but none of them seem to be solidifing. Friday I went to my neighbor's house to watch the debate. It was interesting because I heard the first 2 on the radio... it is a different experience to actually watch it. Bush sure does blink a lot. Maybe he needs eye drops. I got fed up at one point and Andrea topped off my Diet Coke with a little (okay a lot) of Captian Morgans. Saturday was a work day. It was beautiful out and I got to wander out and soak up some sun. After I escaped I hung out with Lynne. It was nice to have a in depth discussion with her. I didn't agree with her on everything, but I could see her point. I will try and write more on this later... once my thoughts gel. :) Sunday was a lazy day... I did manage to get the garage organized a bit. I only have 9 boxes of books left in the garage. Only. I now can get my car in there so I don't have to scrape in the morning. I took a nap which was only supposed to be an hour... ended up being 3 hours. That meant I was up until 1 tossing and turning.

My appointment at the hand specialist in on Nov 4th. Can't wait.

I am wearing my new blue clogs that I bought as a treat for finishing Art Fair. [image]chicalookate_45162 0351.jpg[/image] It is the first time I am getting to wear them. I love Dansko shoes... I just wish they weren't so expensive. They make my feet happy. And happy feet are important.

I am having clothes issues right now. I stand in front of the closet in the morning and wish I could just wear a sheet. I need to go shopping, but I am having body issues these days. *sigh*

Hand issues
10.05.04 (3:56 pm)   [edit]
Went to the doctor yesterday to get the results of my EMG test. It looks like I have nerve damage in my right hand that matches that of Carpal Tunnel. No damage shows in my left, but my doctor says that doesn't mean that I don't have CT in my left as well. I have to get an appointment with a hand specialist. It will probably be about 6 weeks before I get an appointment. I guess this means no jewelry making marathons.

Craft addiction and frozen drinks
10.04.04 (12:32 pm)   [edit]
Good Morning! I am trying to pry my eyes open enough to see if I am hitting the right keys.

My weekend....

~Made the mistake of going to Michaels after work with my friend Carrie... I bought christmas ornaments to paint. Like I need another craft? Yikes! Then we went to the International House of Cow.. aka Outback Steakhouse .... and had a couple Wallabye Darns. Frozen peach drinks are lovely. Would have to think what I would have purchased if I had the drinks before I went to Michaels.

~My sister Melissa's wedding was Sunday. It was very nice. Great songs ... they had a woman sing 3 songs during the service. She sang "My Funny Valentine" and "At Last" and one other one I can't remember the name. The song they left the ceremony with was "Getting Jiggy With It" which made me laugh. They worked their dogs into the vows which I thought was sweet.

~Made some chocolate chip cookies... with dark chocolate chips. They were quite yummy. I also just drove around Jackson some to try and figure out were things were. THere were about 2 miles of Pro Life protesters out holding signs that said "God Forgives" and "Heal our Country". They were awfully close to the road, I was a bit concerned they might be run over. At least they were peaceful... but if I had a pro choice bumper sticker I am not sure they would have been.

~Talked my mom into registering to vote!

~Bought myself some flowers.

Crisp fall weather
10.01.04 (4:02 pm)   [edit]
Just bought tickets to go see Wanda Sykes on the 22nd. It is a birthday present to myself. I don't have any other plans for it yet, but it is still a few weeks off. Any ideas about what I should do?

It is so beautiful here today. It was hard coming back to work after lunch. Especially after I spent most of the morning in a meeting. We are doing a "programatic" review of the library. But of course the one area most of us have problems with will probably not be made to change. *sigh* It is like beating your head against the wall. I am not holding my breath for anything to happen.
